What is a Backup Camera?

After the statistics surrounding backup-related driving fatalities, Congress initiated a law regulating that all new vehicles sold in the U.S. have a built-in backup camera included as standard equipment by 2018.

Backup cameras are mounted at the rear of the vehicle and stream to a monitor within the driver’s view. The cameras are sometimes mounted on the rear bumper of a vehicle, sometimes below the rear fender, and sometimes are hidden behind an emblem that drops away when the vehicle is placed in reverse. The normal camera pans as wide as 130-degrees. Most new vehicles include an automatic stop if a moving object is detected to the rear of the vehicle.
