Easily Test Your Vehicle's Battery Voltage

Testing your car's battery is an easy procedure that can give you a good idea of whether or not you need to replace it.

Testing for Voltage

Make sure your voltmeter is set to measure in voltage. With the vehicle turned off touch the red positive test lead on the voltmeter to the positive terminal on the battery; at the same time touch the black negative test lead to the black terminal on the battery. This should give you an accurate reading of how much voltage your battery is putting out.

Analyzing the Results

?If the battery measures more than 12.4 volts and holds a charge then it is safe to say that you don't need a replacement battery. On the contrary, if the battery measures less than 12.4 volts and doesn't hold a charge then you are probably going to need to replace it.
